History
About 8000 years ago, just after the end of the Ice Age
the River Pont flowed through an area of wild moorland ,
interspersed with lakes and wetlands.

On its northward course to join the River Blyth, the River
Pont passed through a chain of Lakes that later became
known as Prestwick Carr.

This was the area where the first early settlement of
Ponteland was established , that was in turn occupied
by the Romans , Anglo-Saxons & the Normans.

The Romans & the Anglo-Saxons disagreed somewhat
on the origins of the name Ponteland.

The Romans claim that Ponteland meant "Bridge Over
The Swamp", whereas the Anglo-Saxons said that it
simply meant an Island beside the River Pont.

Over the centuries Ponteland grew as a village and
was hounded by persistent flooding.

Ponteland has changed significantly during the last
century, with it's population boom of the 50's and
60's, after it's Railway construction and subsequent
destruction.

Today Ponteland has realised its potential, with an
array of Shops, Businesses, Schools and Restaurants,
replacing the buildings of old.
